Trip Notes 9/26/17

This week’s trips column will focus on a trio of races that flew under the radar during a stakes-laden weekend. We’ll start with Laurel before moving to Belmont.
Saturday
Laurel Race 9: #2 PATRIOTIC QUEST
PATRIOTIC QUEST had a rough go of it in his debut race.
He broke about a length slow under Jomar Torres but recovered quickly and advanced while splitting rivals inside the opening furlong. PATRIOTIC QUEST was asked to split a different pair of rivals as the far turn approached before inheriting the rail midway on the bend.
As the top of the stretch arrived, PATRIOTIC QUEST was forced to steady off heels, effectively killing his chances to win. Once in the clear, PATRIOTIC QUEST put forth a mild bid to secure fourth before galloping out strongly. He should be able to build on this start next time out.
Sunday
Belmont Race 1: #4 GOING STRONG
GOING STRONG was off slower than the rest and grew detached from the field within the opening furlong. He appeared to be hopelessly far back as the quarter pole approached but Joel Rosario didn’t give up, tipping his mount out three-wide for the stretch run. Once Rosario realized how much horse he had left, he guided GOING STRONG to the seven-path and saw him pick off several rivals, all but longshot winner #8 CINDERELA EL CROME.
Rosario can’t count on a fast pace like this one to develop next time out, so getting GOING STRONG into it sooner is a must. If he does, GOING STRONG would be very dangerous in another spot like this.
Belmont Race 9: #2 NEWS ANCHOR
Once again, Joel Rosario showed little urgency early and it came back to bite him on heavily-favored NEWS ANCHOR.
NEWS ANCHOR had every opportunity to advance inside of #4 FUN PROSPECT down the backstretch, but Rosario chose to stay further back. NEWS ANCHOR remained inside for the far turn run but was later forced to steady behind the fading FUN PROSPECT, dropping all the way to last at the top of the stretch.
Rosario guided his mount to daylight as soon as he could following the altercation and NEWS ANCHOR responded in a big way, closing for third beaten just three lengths. He may not offer a great price in his next start, but NEWS ANCHOR is obviously a talent to watch for in the near future.
