Saratoga Stars of the Week

Yet another great week of racing in the books at The Spa, as last week marked the midway point of the meet. This past week’s races were headlined by Saturday’s Grade 1 Fourstardave Handicap and featured one of my stars of the week, World Approval. See where he ranks amongst my other stars and who else ran big this past week.

  1. World Approval– All eyes were on Disco Partner in the Grade 1 Fourstardave Handicap, as the six-furlong world record holder (1:05.67) attempted to make it two for two going the mile distance. However, World Approval had upset on his mind. This world-class 5-year-old gelding cut back in distance, going one mile for the first time since his 2-year-old season and it did not affect him at all. With his eyes set on the pacesetter of the race, Sassy Little Lila, World Approval bought his time and made his move on the far turn and took the lead with a furlong to go, eventually crossing the wire in 1:37.65, 2 ¼ lengths ahead of Time Test. This win brings his 2017 record to 4-3-0-0.

Pure Silver- Silver turned to gold when Pure Silver put away a field of seven others in Saturday’s 6 ½ furlong Grade 2 Adirondack Stakes. Going off as the 8/5 favorite, this 2-year-old daughter of Mission Impazible broke third out of the gate, but easily took over the lead from Di Maria before the ¼ mile pole. Turning for home, second placed Limited View faded to the back of the pack, making way for Southampton Way to take second. However, it was too late, as Pure Silver opened up and eventually hit the wire 9 ½ lengths ahead of her competition. This win makes it three in a row for Pure Silver and with how impressive and easy it looked, her performance marks her as one of the top 2-year-old filly’s in the country.

Copper Bullet– After a poor trip last time out in the Grade 3 Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs, where he finished second, Copper Bullet managed to turn a better, but still less than ideal trip into a win in the Grade 2 Saratoga Special Weight. Copper Bullet broke out of the gate into third position and raced three-wide the entire way, battling on with Mo Diddley and Barry Lee. Similar to Pure Silver, as the field headed into the stretch, Copper Bullet made his move and left the rest of his opponents behind, winning by 4 lengths. In taking home his first graded stakes win, this son of More Than Ready stamped himself as one of this year’s 2-year-old colts to watch.

Sunset Ridge– As the 1-5 favorite, Sunset Ridge rose to victory in her third straight race, remaining undefeated. Facing a field of four, this 3-year-old filly of Algorithms broke into fourth, but quickly made up ground to sit comfortably in second place behind Silly Sister. At the ½ mile pole, Sunset Ridge made her move and completely romped the rest of the field in a 16 ¾ length victory over Moondance Joy. Stallwalkin’ Dude– After finishing fourth in the Grade 2 Belmont Sprint, Stallwalkin’ Dude arrived at Saratoga in search of his third straight Tale of the Cat Stakes title. With jockey Joe Bravo aboard, Stallwalkin’ Dude did just that. This 5-year-old gelding of City Place did so with a drop in class. However, it wasn’t as easy as expected. After the first ¼ mile, Stallwalkin’ Dude sat 12 lengths off the lead with 10-1 longshot, Chief Lion, setting the pace in fractions of :21.96 and :44.79. As the field reached the far turn, Stallwalkin’ made his move and began to make up ground, running five-wide into the stretch. As Chief Lion tired, Stallwalkin’ Dude hooked up with Loose On The Town and battled him to the wire, winning by a neck.
