Twelve days down at Saratoga, twenty-eight to go. Day 13 of the meet features ten races, including a very wide-open renewal of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame Stakes. That will be race nine.
Paul Hundley (@vapaul67) will be providing FREE picks & analysis of all 10 races. Be sure to give Paul a follow on twitter; he’ll be handicapping Saratoga every Friday of the meet.
Take it away, Paul!
Hello everyone it’s another Friday, and this begins Week 3 of the Saratoga meet. It’s also Hall Of Fame Day, capped by the Grade 2 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes! Congratulations to this year’s class of inductees! Let’s get right to the selections, shall we?
7-Sand City is 3rd off the layoff for Carlos Martin (19%) and comes in after first time in 4 a tag at today’s level in last outing, ran a nice 2nd/7 beaten 4 lengths. Gets Irad aboard.
6-Quick on the Draw drops in for a tag for first time as well. Trainer James Bond is 3 for last 12 first time Maiden Claiming with +$3.23 ROI.
6-Talkin Til Midnight is going 3rd off layoff for Linda Rice (25%) is also dropping from the 40K level (33% down +2 classes) , turf to dirt, and route to sprint (24%). Jose Ortiz rides.
2-Luna Rising already has a start at this meet, so-so 7th place effort of 12 beaten 8 lengths. Also has good early speed for Kiaran McLaughlin, who’s having quite the meet so far.
1-Switzerland has made 3 career starts, failing as the favorite at prices of 2/5, 4/5, and 2/5. Now switches to turf for Chad Brown, and will be tough if he can show the early speed he showed on fast dirt. Still,, how can you trust him, knowing he’s probably going to be below even money again today?
6-Factorial has failed at this level on grass twice already, but does have good early speed and if the favorite doesn’t take to turf, has the possibility ongoing gate to wire with Jose Ortiz aboard. Kind of a weak MSW.
1-Starlite Mission makes 2nd career start for Gary Contessa after a 2nd of 10 3 weeks ago at Belmont. Has a very nice 5 furlong breeze since. Rosario rides today as he did in debut.
5-My Roxy Girl also is making 2nd start, running 3rd in same race with the 1, now switches to Castellano. Was up near a brisk pace in debut before slightly fading.
4-Diversify tries turf for first time and if he can translate his dirt form to turf, will probably be tough to beat. Trainer Rick Violette is only 11% first turf however, and Jose Ortiz jumps off to ride top choice for Mott. Telling.
6-Night Prowler was 2nd vs similar two back, been alternating between Allowance and Stakes, if he can find 2015 form can contend.
2-Iron Mizz was 2nd at this level last out, and breaking from rail Rosario might take this Pletcher filly right to the front and play catch me if you can.
3-Barrel of Dreams was 3rd in the race with Mizz, but Charlton Baker is 27% third off the layoff and her mare had a pair of wins over the Saratoga turf last year.
8-Lifelong Dreams won at this level 2 back, then was moved down to $20K where he stumbled at the start, losing all chance for this 3 year old gelding who loves to be on or near the lead early. Is 1st off claim for Gary Gullo(20%)
3-Curtis drops in for a tag for first time, makes 2nd start for Chad Summers of Mind Your Biscuits fame, who is 3 for last 4 2nd start with. Irad has the mount.
4-Petrov, the probable favorite, I think will find his niche in 1 turn races like this just like Whitmore did for Ron Moquett. Also goes route to sprint, and did run 2nd in a 100K Stakes at 6 furlongs in only 2nd career start.
9-Portfolio Manager will hope the speed collapses. Brown trains this 4 year old colt, who just missed at this level last out. Was 2nd here in debut 2 years ago.
I was tempted to send a strongly worded tweet to Mr. Stone, and then an epiphany hit me; this might be a GOOD thing. Honestly, I don’t see him going favored, but if he does oh well, I’m with him in this one whatever the price. Is 3 for 3 and has done it without have a fast pace to run at in any of his 3 wins. Rosario/Chadster just a ridiculous 40% together!
4-Yoshida, at one time, I thought might be the best 3 year old turfer in the country, and that may still prove to be true. The great thing about him is he has won both on the lead and from well off the pace. Don’t like that Rosario and JRV are on others, though has no slouch in Jose Ortiz.
2-Big Handsome was 2nd in a $100K Stakes last out after a dominant win 2 back in another $100K race. Is a possibility to set the early pace here.

2-Kierland nearly won at this level last out for Mike Maker. Had a decent pace to run at that day, not sure will get the same setup today.
