Three-year-old sprinters take center stage this Saturday at Santa Anita in the Laz Barrera Stakes and Angels Flight Stakes. The first of nine races goes at 3:30 p.m. EST; let’s dig in!
Race 1: 1-8-5
#1 AVALANCHE looks like a solid favorite to start the day. He has a reliable late kick and meets a field that’s inferior on speed figures. #8 FASHION BUSINESS, second in the La Jolla Handicap last summer, finds a soft spot for his seasonal debut but his first start back last year was dreadful; thinking he’ll need this one before he’s primed. #5 TEMPLE KEYS took advantage of class relief to get a win last time out, now he steps back up to a level where’s he done decently in the past. Prat climbing aboard is encouraging.
Race 2: 2-5-6
#2 CORONADO COOL won her last two vs. conditional claimers before finding higher-priced open claimers much too difficult. Today’s class drop should help her immensely. #5 FOXY FRESH romped against similar last time out but picks up significant weight today. #6 IRISH DAME is the best of the rest.
Race 3: 4-2-5
#4 VICTORY ELEMENT went wide but rallied strongly for second in his debut; should negotiate the added ground and score at a short price. #2 BLAZE OF GLORY also adds ground, which he should appreciate; second-time starter for Mandella figures to improve. #5 DRAFT PICK has the experience edge, particularly around two turns; fringe player.
Race 4: 4-8-7
#4 SIX POINT RACK gets a huge rider switch to Van Dyke as he tries to reverse a pair of narrow losses in his last two starts; should make good on his favoritism. #8 CALVERT STREET profiles as the one to catch; good enough to stick with these late. #7 LYMEBYRD moves up if there’s a scratch.
Race 5: 4-1-3
The Grade III Laz Barrera Stakes
#4 ZULFIKHAR should get a perfect setup just behind #2 CALEXMAN and #3 MCKALE (whom he beat last time out); calling for a minor upset. #1 KANTHAKA wisely cuts back after two lackluster performances around two turns. He’s 2-for-2 at this distance but got very favorable setups each time, so he still has something to prove; don’t settle for a short price. MCKALE might get softened up by CALEXMAN but should hold on for a share.
Race 6: 4-8-5-6
#4 CONQUEST TYPHOON made a middle move into a torrid pace last time out but still managed second. He makes his second start off a layoff today and boasts a 9-5-2-0 record at the one-mile distance. #8 YA GOTTA WANNA steps up off two straight wins over this course; respect. #5 RONALD R and #6 LUCKY BRYAN will pick up the pieces.
Race 7: 6-7-8
#6 AWESOME E K, one of several looking for a breakthrough in this basement-level maiden claiming group, was a narrowly-beaten fourth last time out and has the speed to put himself in the race early; the pick. #7 TROJAN TIME drops slightly and should get a favorable pressing trip. #8 DOWNSIDE UP figures in the exotics but is tough to trust at 0-for-17 lifetime.
Race 8: 8-2-1-4
The Angels Flight Stakes
#8 TRUE ROYALTY steps up but has won two straight, her last coming over #7 HIGHLAND LASS off a long layoff. If she improves off that she’s got a great upset chance. #2 MOONSHINE MEMORIES won two Grade Is at age two but hasn’t been seen since a poor effort in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. Class of the field is hard to toss though. #1 SHOW IT N MOE IT won two straight with gaudy speed figures earlier this year but burned money when she ran second in a state-bred stake last time out. The competition is a little tougher here but she can get a piece of this. #4 EMBOLDENED moves up if there’s a scratch.
Race 9: 12-9-5
#12 UNCHAINING MELODY started slowly in her stateside debut but closed well to be third against similar. Breakthrough possible with Van Dyke, who could have a big Saturday, climbing aboard. #9 TOKEN VOW made up plenty of ground in her hillside debut, consider. #5 WHAT’S BRUIN intrigues stepping onto the turf course off a solid second on dirt.
