Racing fans will be treated to an exciting nine-race card at “The Great Race Place” featuring four graded stakes, including the Grade III Robert B. Lewis for aspiring Kentucky Derby contenders. First post at Santa Anita is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Eastern; let’s get started.
Race 1: 12-6-14
#12 SLICK TRICK closed well after starting slowly in her debut down the hill; good possibility she improves while adding distance today; she just needs to save ground. #6 SUPER GOOD took third in a similar spot when last seen; competitive speed figures put her in the hunt. #14 RANCOR could be dangerous turning back if she draws in.
Race 2: 6-1-5
#6 CORE BELIEFS closed well to be third in his debut for Eurton; should improve enough for a second time out score while adding Lasix and another 1/16th of a mile. #1 CURLY’S ROCKET dueled the whole way three weeks ago and just missed graduating. He once again draws the rail, so expect similar tactics. He was three parts of a length ahead of the top pick when last seen. #5 ONCE ON WHISKEY should at least be fast early based on his solid worktab for Baffert. The son of Bodemeister cost $150k at auction.
Race 3: 1-2-3
The Grade II Palos Verdes Stakes
#1 ROY H, a 2017 Eclipse winner, finds a very soft spot for his first start since winning the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. He is much the best on paper and should be used as a single in all wagers. #2 BOBBY ABU DHABI won off the bench last time out with a career-best effort over this course; respect. #3 AMERICANIZE, a game third in the Midnight Lute on New Year’s Eve when last seen, is a logical underneath contender.
Race 4: 4-1-3
#4 A LITTLE BIT ME broke from the rail in her initial downhill try, dueled inside, and tired late. She could work out an ideal stalking trip just off #3 MONGOLIAN SHOPPER today, which could make the difference at potentially square odds. #1 TIZANILLUSION has racked up four straight runner-up finishes, the last one coming over this course, and the move to the rail won’t help. However, she is not to be taken lightly based on speed figures. MONGOLIAN SHOPPER will take them as far as she can.
Race 5: 2-7-5
The Grade III Robert B. Lewis Stakes
#2 PEPE TONO displayed a great closing kick (albeit into a very fast pace) to break his maiden last time out. The pedigree says he won’t mind adding a bit of ground, and he should get at least a little pace to work with. The tune-up work for this was strong. #7 PEACE grinded out a solid if not spectacular maiden score over this course when last seen; may appreciate getting blinkers added today. #5 SHIVERMETIMBERS didn’t get the cleanest trip in the Sham, and he may have bounced that day after a big winning effort at Del Mar over PEACE two-back; don’t dismiss.
Race 6: 3-4-8
#3 MERCER ISLAND tired badly last time out but returns to the races at a reduced level off a series of stamina-building works for Miller; the pick. #4 SOUTHERN THUNDER lures Prat off a wide journey in his first try vs. winners; eligible to improve. #8 MOONLIGHT BLUE improved dramatically in his first try at this level to get second; good chance to win if he replicates that today.
Race 7: 5-7-4
The Grade II San Marcos Stakes
#5 ITSINTHEPOST was an easy winner of last month’s San Gabriel over five of these; the extra furlong only helps. #7 HAYABUSA ONE overcame a long layoff to dust an allowance/optional claiming field last time out; will be rolling late. #4 ISOTHERM, last year’s San Marcos winner, probably needed one as he checked in fifth in the San Gabriel off a 10-month vacation. He should have a late say as well.
Race 8: 9-2-3
The Grade II San Pasqual Stakes
#9 TOP OF THE GAME’s last two can be tossed; he didn’t belong on grass and was stymied at the quarter pole in his last dirt start. If he runs back to his Comma To The Top Stakes score he’s got a good shot at this. #2 MUBTAAHIJ’s last two have been sub-prime but his Awesome Again score over this course, his lone Santa Anita start to date, puts him squarely in the win discussion. #3 ACCELERATE is 0-for-8 at Santa Anita but has only missed the board in one of those starts; shows up almost every time.
Race 9: 11-7-5-8-1
#11 BOWIE was a game second in his first grass try going five furlongs at Del Mar. Freshened since November, he draws well for his first downhill start and is a candidate to take these all the way. #7 STURDY ONE regained his form last time out; he had some solid performances over this course last year and might pop at a price here. #5 GOTHAM DESIRE had trouble in the lane but powered home late against lesser last time out. #8 BEAU SQUARE will be rolling late. #1 GONE TO TOWN was an effortless winner vs. maidens in her first downhill try.
