Santa Anita Park
There’s no more Derby preps at Santa Anita, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t have fun there on Saturday. There’s an 11-race program, headlined by the Thor’s Echo Stakes. The first race will go off at 12:00 PM PDT.
To help you out with all the action, we’re happy to have Robert Criscola (@itsgood2beking) providing FREE picks & analysis of the card! Robert’s been a Southern California handicapper on Danonymous Racing for a while now; be sure to give him a follow on twitter.
Good luck to everyone playing along!
An 11-race card anchored by the Thor’s Echo Handicap is in store for Saturday at Santa Anita. First post is 3 p.m. Eastern; let’s roll.
Race 1: 8-5-6-9
#8 MAJESTIC EAGLE has run second to next-out winners in back-to-back starts; good enough to beat these based on speed figures. #5 FRIENDLY OUTTHEDOR lures Smith while cutting back a furlong, which could strengthen his late kick; consider. #6 CAJUN TREASURE cost $250k at auction and shows some decent works for his debut; watch the board. #9 PAPA JOE exits the Brown barn after running fourth on debut at Gulfstream but could make his impression felt if he runs back to that introductory start.
Race 2: 6-1-3
#6 ANITA G. sheds weight with Ceballos off a solid comeback effort at this level and draws a favorable post outside #1 JUST BE HELD. That rival drops off her best effort in a while, as she dueled early and persevered for second. However, JUST BE HELD loses Ceballos and picks up seven pounds. #3 RECKLESS CHARM, 1-for-27 lifetime, should roll late for a piece.
Race 3: 6-3-7-5
#6 MISCHIEVIOUS LASS meets a weak field of maiden claimers cutting back to a sprint; it’s now or never for her. #3 TAKES TWO TO TENGA showed marginal ability to grab second on debut; consider. #7 OH MY SOUL and #5 VENICE should be used underneath in the deep exotics.
Race 4: 2-3-7
#2 TENGS RHYTHM is eligible to improve in her second start of the year; the one to beat on speed figures as it is. #3 NAUGHTY SOPHIE goes first time out for Miller and gets in light with Espinoza; logical alternative. #7 LETS LIGHT THE WAY should move forward in her second career outing.
Race 5: 7-8-1
#7 SAIDA ran into eventual stakes winner Mongolian Shopper when last seen in a race like this; should be perfectly placed just outside #1 RED LIVY. #8 A LITTLE BIT ME drops and lures Roman; close in both her starts over this course. RED LIVY will take them as far as she can.
Race 6: 6-4-7
#6 PERFECT TALE produced a fair rally on debut despite acting up at the gate; may improve if he can shake his greenness. #4 FOR THE HUSTLE is a four-year-old firster but shows several good works and gets blinkers on; could sit the trip. #7 JOHNNY RAY is the best of the rest.
Race 7: 1-2-6
The Thor’s Echo Handicap
#1 EDWARDS GOING LEFT demonstrated he has no equal at the state-bred level when he romped by six in the Cal Cup Sprint two starts ago. He should demolish these dropping out of a third-place effort in the Grade I Triple Bend. #2 TOUGH SUNDAY ran hard nearly every step of the way to gut out a win in the rained-out Sensational Star last time out; respect. #6 MAKE IT A TRIPLE will be tested for class but is trending in the right direction.
Race 8: 3-5-6
#3 CALIFORNIA JOURNEY lacked late kick last time out after hitting the shelf for nearly a year off a solid maiden victory. He could get a good trip drafting behind a quick pace and spring a mild upset. #5 TULE FOG should be prominent early; his efforts from the latter part of 2017 stamp him as a contender. #6 KINGS RIVER KING will be rolling late.
Race 9: 6-3-9
#6 CLASSICO and #3 WELL MEASURED should be up close early and dueling late; slight edge to the former going first off the Glatt claim (22%). The latter typically runs speed figures good enough to beat these but is just 1-for-12 over this course. #9 JUNIOR GILLIAM should take advantage of any potential pace meltdown.
Race 10: 3-1-5-6
#3 WELL DEVELOPED’s first start of 2018 was his first vs. open company and he took them gate to wire. He steps up in class again but drilled a bullet and cuts back a furlong. #1 AQUAPHOBIA drops out of the Grade II San Luis Rey and scales back significantly; main threat from the tail of the field. #5 RIVER ECHO should not be left out returning to the turf course, a long overdue move. #6 AIR VICE MARHSALL has burned too much money in the past to trust on top and his last victory on turf was by just a nose vs. lesser. Still, he’s too consistent to dismiss entirely.
Race 11: 8-6-9
#8 JERRY’S THUNDER was a gritty second vs. similar last time out; cutting back a 1/16th works to his advantage. #6 INSUBORDINATION has had plenty of chances but fits on speed figures. #9 RIGHTEOUS WAVE faded late in his debut vs. tougher but drops today while cutting back and adding blinkers; Headley fires at 16% with horses off extended layoffs.
