Oaklawn’s got a ten-race card this Saturday, headlined by the Bayakoa Stakes. We’ve got Shawn Frank (@BoxEmandBetEm) providing FREE picks & analysis of the entire program.
Give Shawn a follow on twitter if you can—his work will be featured on Danonymous throughout the Oaklawn meet. He’ll also be posting a weekly Derby Top Ten, featuring picks from various twitter contributors, on his site, kentuckyderbyfever.com.
Take it away, Shawn!
A very average card Saturday, though the Bayakoa looks very solid. The track was drying out on Friday and it looked as though speed was good. Monitor the way the track is playing as we approach Monday’s terrific card. Let’s find some prices and enjoy the day. Race 1) 7-2-6-3
#7-Zaevion-Gets off the rail at this 6F distance; should be dead fit second off the layoff, with a stalk and pounce trip. Coming off a win, off the layoff adds to appeal.
#2-Bye Crazy Eyes-Will be up close to the pace in this short field, which will help. Will also be tighter second out.
#6-Heavy Roller-Claimed and immediately rises in class.
Race 2) 7-9-3-10
#7-Olivia’s Uncle-Rock bottom maiden race, with lots of question marks to go around; many of these horses cost a ton of money, landed tepidly on the Assmussen charge, drops out of a MSW, should be near the wire.
#9-Vallier-Lightly raced and Cabrera sticks, drops to the lowest level as well. As with the others in here, plenty of issues taking this one second.
#3-Uncle Pappy-Three year old vs. elders here, gelded, ran into some decent 3yold colts in last two races.
Race 3) 3-6-2-1
#3-Rings of Jupiter-Parking lot wide in last, Hartman claims and jumps this one up in class and attracts Cabrera; has run well at the distance.
#6-Minefield-Should project to get a nice trip close to the pace with Ricardo in the saddle. Second out, for the meet, will be ready to take a nice step forward.
#2–Kahramani-Intrigues, fresh and will save plenty of ground. Takes a class drop and the jock sticks and has two wins with this horse.
Race 4) 8-6-5-1
#8-Imperatore-Normally don’t like the wide draws at this 1 1 1/6 distance, but short field, and has speed to clear horse on inside. Another horse second off the layoff that likes the distance.
#6-Salsa’s Return-If there is moisture in the track this one certainly moves up. Drops as was over his head in last; hard knocker that gives effort every time.
#5-Repent With Me-Court has been riding well, this one will stalk the pace and will be fitter second off the layoff.
Pick 5 – 68/5678/6/236/12457
Race 5) 9-8-6-1
#9-Komrad-Cabrera and Moquett, with a solid work in tow, two back, figures to get the trip with an outside post, drops down to the maiden 20K level.
#8-Midnight Las Vegas-Figures to be rocking from the start, on the engine, the work three back says let’s roll.
#6-News Box-Drops in class, if the pace gets insane, this one will fly late and pick up the pieces.
Pick 4 – 5678/6/2367/45
Race 6) 6-7-4-9
#6-Love That Lute-Let’s get a price home here. I see plenty of knock to help this one rally into. Drops in class, will sit off the pace and if this one can get back to the Oaklawn race three back has a chance to score.
#7-Crawford-This one likes to hang for Assmussen, goes turf to dirt, will get first run on the closers.
#4-Dupree-Could get caught up in a speed duel, certainly can move up after having one over the course.
Race 7) 8-9-10
#8-Cleopatra’s Gold-IF the track comes up fast, I like this one. Caught moisture in the track the last two races, go back to the fast track, three back this one fits. Picks up the services of Cabrera as well, enticing.
#9-Desert Thief-Likes the Oaklawn strip and the distance, given a brief freshening, ran well off the bench. Nice post to be in position turning for home to get the job done.
#10-Wicked West-Vazquez stays in the saddle and jumps in class off the claim from Ortiz. Another with an outside post that figures to better second out.
Race 8) 4-1A-9-3
#4-Flight Risk-Single in the late pick 4 and pick 5 sequences. Much to like, I’ll take the single and ty to hit the late sequence for Assmussen and Rico. Should be dead fit for this, nice inside post adds.
#1A-Powerful Ally-Ran a solid race off the long layoff and will move forward, I just like the lightly raced #4 better.
#9-Cumulative-Outside post hinders, goes turf to dirt.
Race 9) 3-5-4-6
#3-Farrell-This gal is primed for a nice season. Is perfect at the distance, won off the freshening in her Oaklawn debut; there are many in here that like to be up front, but she is adaptable and doesn’t need the lead.
#5-Torrent-If the speed gets insane, she can rate and take advantage, though this is a big step in class off her last.
#4-Streamline-Another in the same mold that I actually picked to win the race that her, Ferrell and Terra came out of on January 13th.
Race 10) 7-10-9-1
