SPOTLIGHT RACES OF THE DAY
SAM HOUSTON RACE PARK RACE 7
POST TIME: 3:47 PM EST
This race could be washed off the turf, but if it stays on, it will be a very interesting one. It’s a field of nine Texas-bred allowance horses going one mile on the lawn. The morning line favorite is the 5, Bentley’s Show. His lone victory from eleven starts came on the grass, back in September at Remington Park. Last out, he finished a steady second as the favorite over the Sam Houston grass. He’ll shift over in class, from open n/w2L claimers to Texas-bred allowance horses. It’ll be interesting to see if that will do him any good.
The 2, Don’t Blame Dexter, is another interesting horse. He ships in from Delta Downs, for the Karl Broberg barn, which has been dominating at that meet. Last out, he won going away against n/w3L company at seven furlongs on the dirt. This will mark his first race on the grass, should he stay.
SUNLAND PARK RACE 8
POST TIME: 5:29 PM EST
The feature from Sunland Park is a New Mexico-bred allowance race going 6 1/2 furlongs. The horse to keep an eye on is the undefeated Diabolical Gator, who will break from the six post in the field of eight. He broke his maiden on debut at Zia Park back in November, then crushed a state-bred n/w1x allowance group last out by four lengths, going six furlongs in an impressive 1:10.33 seconds.
The 3, Long Stormy Trip, has had excellent form lately, with his only stumble coming when stretching out against stakes company around two turns. He hasn’t missed the board around two turns since April 24. Last out, he finished second as the 9/5 favorite against similar company.
FAIR GROUNDS RACE 8
POST TIME: 5:37 PM EST
You don’t see many stakes races on Tuesdays, but the Mardi Gras Stakes at Fair Grounds is an exception. It’s for fillies and mares going 5 1/2 furlongs on the lawn. There’s a chance it will get rained off the turf, and if it does, the 7, Finley’sluckycharm possesses a huge edge over the rest. She’s scheduled to make her turf debut here, but she’s compiled quite the resume on dirt, winning three graded stakes last year. This will be her 2018 debut; she ended 2017 with a ninth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.
Among those with turf experience, the 5, Triple Chelsea, and the 2, Contributing. Triple Chelsea is coming off a stakes victory in the Pan Zareta Stakes, finishing one length ahead of Contributing, who came in second. Prior to that, Contributing was second in the Richard Scherer Stakes.
