Monzante Memorial Fundraising Challenge

UPDATE: FUNDRAISING TOTALS ANNOUNCED WITH FEW DAYS LEFT IN MONZANTE MEMORIAL FUNDRAISING CHALLENGE

July 29, 2013

Monzante Memorial Fundraising Challenge. Updated fundraising totals.

Last week started off with a lot of outrage from horse racing fans and advocates, who were appalled that a former grade 1 winner, Monzante, had lost his life after breaking down in a basement level claiming race at Evangeline. We were approached by several people who had ideas for how this tragedy could be turned into something positive. It was our twitter friend, @primeequine who’d suggested that we start a fundraiser, allowing teams to assemble from all over, with the mission of assisting charities who function to facilitate racehorse retirement, care for them and find horses new homes after their careers on the track.

We’re happy to report that people, some familiar with fundraising and others who had never done it before, took the initiative and captained eight teams to support the fundraising goals of eight worthy charities and rescues.

The fundraising started late Tuesday, July 23, and the drive will continue until this coming Thursday, August 1.

Here are each team’s fundraising totals, as of Monday, July 29.

Announcement: In the wake of the tragic death of former graded stakes winner, Monzante (who broke down in a $4K claiming race over the weekend, see Paulick Report story here), we are announcing the Monzante Memorial Fundraising Challenge.

The team that raises the most money between now and August 1, 2013, will win the fundraising challenge and receive a reward. The reward is still to be determined. We just needed to get this process started now while there’s still outrage over this untimely and unnecessary death.

  1. Nothing will change until trainers like Mike Mitchell are forced to change. He killed Star Over the Bay as an older horse and my favorite Leprechaun Kid who died during training. What I would like to see is a national database of horses injured or killed on the track or in training. Then we can find out who’s doing the damage.

      1. Mitchell could die a hundred times and suffer all the while.. and I wouldn’t call it even. His mistreatment of horses is monumental and goes back some 25 years now. Ironically,in the late 80s, Mike was down to his last two horses and had announced his retirement… But he didn’t follow through. Over the next months, his fortunes changed drastically. Form reversals were the norm. He took horses from the best and moved them up 5-10 lengths in two weeks. When asked what changed his fortunes, Mitchell said God was assisting him. I’ve watched everything he has done over these last 30 years. I despise him for hurting those horses.. for treating them as waste. I do admit to some satisfaction for his debilitating condition now.

  2. How about a rescue stepping up to rescue Porfido before he meets Monzante’s fate? I tried to bring awareness to Monzante before Satuday’s fateful race, but I could not elicit any responses. Thank you.

    1. i agree with you about Porfido. I saw that he is scheduled to run at Canterbury on august 10th in a $7500 claiming race…hope he will get help too!!

  3. The TB racehorse, Cost of Freedom, winner of nearly $1 million, ran Wednesday at Santa Rosa race track in a $8,000 claiming race. Another horse, Speed Rouser, age 11, also ran in the same race. The horses ran 3rd to last and 2nd to last respectively.

Their breeder is Harris Farms of Coalinga, CA. Could you respectfully send an e-mail to them and ask why these two geldings have not been retired. Harris has acres of land upon which to put them, plenty of money, and a webpage that will re-home them should Harris choose not to keep them.

  4. Funds are needed to rescue TB racehorses from tracks and offer them a safe retirement. Most of these racehorses are geldings, who, in the eyes of those racing them, have “no other purpose.”

Remember Me Rescue has set up a special fund which will enable them to contact owners and trainers of horses that have earned more than $500,000 and are running for a claiming price of $5000 or less and then offer them retirement, rehabilitation, retraining and rehoming. Please consider a donation in Monzante’s memory, or in the memory or honor of any other horse you love.

A couple of TBs’ retirement are currently being negotiated, but funds are needed towards that purpose. Please feel free to post this request wherever you feel its appropriate.

    For the horses!
