Take it away, Robert!
We have a solid nine-race card at Los Alamitos to go over that features the Soviet Problem Stakes for two-year-old fillies. First post is 3:30 p.m.Eastern.
Race 1: 5-4-6
#5 TAYLOREALSWIFT showed improvement when stretching out at Del Mar last time out. Her effort at Los Al two-back wasn’t anything to write home about, but neither is her competition today. #4 ANGELINA’S HEAVEN, third in each of her two lifetime starts, stands to benefit from a potential ground-saving trip. #6 MILLIE JOEL sheds blinkers in an attempt to relax early and find some late kick.
Race 2: 5-2-6
#5 THE NATURAL is the one to beat on speed figures and sheds weight with Roman; the pick. #2 ALWAYS NEVER has run big in the extended quarter-horse dashes and just drilled a bullet for this; have to believe Bednar will be sending. #6 MT. LEINSTER tries an easier spot off some lackluster efforts but has back class to run to.
Race 3: 6-2-9
#6 BELOVED HOLIDAY finished with interest in a similar race at Del Mar last time out; Los Al’s elongated homestretch helps this one out. #2 CLIFTON BEACH is 0-for-13 lifetime but has run fast enough to beat these numerous times. #9 SOFT TRIP is the best of the rest.
Race 4: 5-4-1
#5 AJAC’s last off a layoff can be forgiven; upset chance if he runs back to his mid-year form. #4 SWISS CHEESE fires consistent speed figures that put him in the hunt here. #1 CHROMIUM should find this level more to his liking, but he makes for a shaky favorite as his best races occurred more than a year ago.
Race 5: 1-7-9
#1 RIDGEFIELD ROCKET was a solid second at this level with a wide trip last time out; could easily break through today. #7 FAST JOHNNY RINGO debuts for Ellis (24% with firsters, 5-for-10 with debut runners for a tag) and lures Talamo; respect. #9 DESERT DOMINATION is inconsistent but is capable of taking this on his best day.
Race 6: 2-1-8-9
#2 KENTAN ROAD is a potential lone speed and has some of the best speed figures in the field; worthy favorite. #1 HANSEN TALE BLUES, a half-length behind the top pick last time out, should be up close early and in the picture late. #8 POWER CAT, a $600k Baffert trainee that’s been out of action for nearly two years, ran well enough in his debut to merit consideration, especially off a bullet work. #9 GOLDEN AGE moves up if there’s a scratch.
Race 7: 6-3-1-8
#6 LOVE MY BUD is 3-for-4 over this course, with the lone loss coming off an extended layoff. He’s found the stakes level too tough in his last two but belongs here. #3 ROCKIN RUDY and #1 HITTERS PARK weren’t far behind the top pick when they met here on Sept. 17; both are an exotics threat. #8 GETOFFMYBACK has been “hit-or-miss” of late but must be included.
Race 8: 1-4-9-5
The Soviet Problem Stakes
#1 ONE FAST BROAD is the one to beat off her Golden State Juvenile win over #4 SPICED PERFECTION. She drilled well for this and passes the eye test when it comes to figuring out whether or not she wants to go this far. SPICED PERFECTION was caught late by the top choice last time out; appears to be racing for second as she may want to go shorter. #9 NEON GYPSY invades off two respectable efforts at Golden Gate; Roman takes over for her dirt debut. #5 TWISTED ROSIE has won two straight and drew off impressively when last seen but needs to improve in the speed figure department.
Race 9: 10-6-7-2
#10 MADELYN’S WILD MAX drew a good stalking post and has hit the board in each of his last three starts. That includes a win two-back and a game runner-up effort over this course before that. #6 HAWK’S EYES threw in a clunker last time out but won a race here two-back and has prior speed figures that put him in the discussion; don’t dismiss. #7 PRINCE CHARMANT picked up a win here during the September meeting before some lackluster tries at Fresno; slotting underneath. #2 UNREAL DEAL intrigues switching surfaces; speed figures say he fits.
