Twelve races headline today’s card at Gulfstream Park, with the first post time at 12:00 PM EST. After a week’s hiatus, we’re happy to have Paul Hundley (@vapaul67) providing FREE picks & analysis of the program. Be sure to give Paul a follow on twitter; he’s handicapped Florida and New York racing in the past, and he’ll be handicapping Gulfstream every Sunday of the meet.
Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Sundays at Gulfstream! Well, I’m not actually AT Gulfstream, but I think you understand. I want to apologize for last week’s no show, I’ve been having a run of health issues (more on this next week) and due to that reason I ran out of quality time to put in a column for last week. Again my apologies.
Speaking of people who are not feeling well, Les Onaka, whom many people know from TVG and is one of the foremost authorities on Quarter horse Handicapping, has been having serious health issues the last several months, including in and out of the hospital the last few weeks. From what his good friend Dave Weaver has said on social media, he is on 15 different medications! Obviously the medical costs have put a tremendous financial burden on Onaka and his family, Weaver has created a GoFundMe to help raise money to help this man who has helped so many. You can reach Dave on Facebook or on Twitter on his handle @icecoldexacta . The GoFundMe runs out this evening, and has a little over $10K raised so far.
RACE 1: 2-3-8
2-PRADO VISION drops from 30Kn2l, made a 5 wide bid in last race, and gets a big jock switch from Meneses to Luis Saez, who is a 29% combo with Trainer Dale Romans. 3-Plein Air made a middle move then flattened out a bit last race at today’s level, 2nd off the layoff. Man is Rosario struggling though.
RACE 2: 5-3-8
5-GRACE B dueled for the lead at today’s level in last going 7 furlongs before finishing 3rd. Now cuts back a furlong. 3-Gamer Girl may duel on the lead today with the returning Satire . If either gets a loose lead will be dangerous. Losing a clear 4 length lead in last a cause for concern.
RACE 3: 3-4-1
3-FLYING GIRL was eased and walked off Thursday before last , which isn’t exactly a great handicapping angle I always look for, however the fact she is back in a race 10 days from that race means she came out ok and may just not have been in frame of mind to run that day. Had been 2 for 2 at Gulfstream before that race. Peter Walder 22% 2nd off the claim. 4-Scatnap jumped up last out after the drop to $6250 after beaten 65 lengths over a 5 race period. Has to be taken seriously again today obviously.
RACE 4: 5-6-7
5-BIRD OF PEACE is a FTS by Gilberto Zerpa 16% , 26% MSW, and a 40 % combo recently with Jaramillo. 6-Flirty goes turf to dirt for Pletcher , makes 2nd career start (28%) puts Blinkers on and comes in off of a bullet work.
RACE 5: 5-3-4
5-SHAAN Team of Castellano and Pletcher scored impressively yesterday with Audible. As for SHAAN, was last seen finishing last in Eatontown at Monmouth last June, but had always ran respectable to pretty well every race before that. Pletcher 30% off 90 days or more. Combo is 33% last 60 days. 3-Holy Helena is the 2017 Woodbine Oaks and Queen’s Plate winner, but makes 4 year old and turf debuts today. Jerkens 21% off 90 days or more, and switches to Jose Ortiz for the first time. More than likely will be favored, but she failed her last 2 in 2017 as the chalk.
RACE 6: 2-9-1
I’m really not sure why Stylitude is 4/5 on the morning line for Looooooooooch racing, while she has good speed figures and the class drop, the odds on m/l is puzzling. 2-MY CANDY FOREST is going turf to dirt and Trainer Anthony Pecoraro is 35% FTL, 35% first time Blinkers, and 38% down 2 or more classes. 9-Quickluckycoco could possibly be on the lead early. When dropped in at today’s level for first time 2 back, beat 12 home but winner that day was much the best. Last out lunged at the start and hit gate. Could be a fair price today.
RACE 7: 5-2-3
5-SWEET STING gets an array of changes. Puts Blinkers on, gets lasix for the first time today, and switches to Jose Ortiz. Jerkens 27% 46-90 days away . Don’t know if we get 10/1 m/l though. 2-Kensington is a FTS for Christophe Clement 13% Dam Rum Charger has 5 turf winners from 8 starters. Sire Kitten’s Joy 15% FTS
RACE 8: 3-4-7
This race begins the late pick 5 and I’m going to play a ticket by singling 3-NAVISTAR here. First try going 2 turns and is making 3 year old debut. Lost to talented Mask in debut. 4-Mississippi scratched out of yesterday’s Holy Bull mainly due to disadvantageous post. The double irony is probably wouldn’t have beaten eventual winner Audible regardless, but now finds himself in yet another tough spot today versus another Pletcher trainee. Did fail vs a similar level last month in 3 year old debut.
RACE 9: 1-5-12
This race is a definite spread race for me in the Pick 5. Taking a chance with FTS 1-MISS MONK and while the trainer does not have great numbers for FTS or turf debuters, the Dam is 4 for 4 with her starters including 2 turf winners, plus has been working on the turf for this, and gets Saez up. Did I mention the 10/1 morning line? 5-Night Owl was 4th/7 beaten just 3/4 length in debut where she was solidly bet at 5/2, made a mild bid and Chad Brown horse’s are 26% 2nd career race. 12-Brattata probable favorite but hard to endorse confidently on top from post 12.
RACE 10: 3-7-10
3-GADSBY TAVERN the last time he was at this price level, exploded to a 94 BRIS Speed fig and won by 2 1/2 lengths. Bobby Dibona 34% third off of a layoff. 7-Summer Scamp is 1st of the claim for Donna Hurtak, just missed last out in post 11 as favorite a month ago in a two turn 8.5 F race.
RACE 11: 4-2-3
My meds are kicking in so I’ll be brief. 4-STARSHIP WILDCAT’S trainer Ruben Graciada is 5 of last 15 second off a layoff and was 3rd versus similar level last out. 2-The Zip Zip Man was 2nd at level 2 back, won 3 back.
RACE 12: 2-11-6
Pick 5 Ticket: 2/1,3,5,7,8,11,12/3,7,10/2,3,4,8/2,11 $84 investment for a $.50 play
Enjoy the Super Bowl afterwards, that is, if Gulfstream isn’t still running!!
