Another great Sunday of racing in Hallandale Beach, Florida, is on tap! Eleven races are on the schedule, with a first post time of 12:00 PM EST.
We’re happy to have Paul Hundley (@vapaul67) providing FREE picks & analysis of the program. Be sure to give Paul a follow on twitter; he’s handicapped Florida and New York racing in the past, and he’ll be handicapping Gulfstream every Sunday of the meet.
Take it away, Paul!
Hello everyone and welcome to the last card of 2017 for Gulfstream Park. Last week there was no edition of Sunday Selections, but 2 weeks ago we had 4 on top winners continuing our streak of a good start early this meet. I have an early Pick 5 ticket, so let’s get right to it!
RACE 1: I must admit the Early Pick 5 could get chalky. 5-ESPRESSO CALIENTE was 4th/8 versus Optional Claimers beaten 3 lengths last out, but made up 5 lengths in the stretch. This will be Edgard Zayas’s 2nd time riding him, and I believe the experience on him last time will help. 2-Seattle Treasure is 1 of 2 uncoupled Francisco D’Angelo entries. Has been facing tougher the last couple races and is in for a tag for first time today. 3-Motatan is the other D’Angelo, he broke his maiden at 35K last out, but D’Angelo is 0 for last 25 with winners of their last race. Using the top 2 here for the Pick 5.
RACE 2: 1-THIRD MAN IN was 2nd in conventional dirt debut last out, over 10 lengths ahead of X Y Runner. Concern is that the horse may have a case of seconditis, as has 6 place finishes in 10 starts. 7- X Y Runner will be gunning early and if there is no pressure on him could go gate to wire. 3-Platinum of Course goes turf to dirt for Michael Tomlinson and drops in class, which he is 37% dropping 2 or more classes. Using these 3.
RACE 3: I may have to turn in the CHALKBUSTERS T-Shirt I won (or I’ll give it to Vinny Di Virgillio) with all the chalk I’m picking early, ughh. 1-JOEL’S SENORITA was 4th beaten less than 2 lengths two races back vs 20K beaten claimers. Has good early speed and is 1st off the claim for Trainer Reid Nagle. 2-Bun Bun (my niece had a pet rabbit named Bun Bun, thing was a terror!) drops from 10K n2L. Has been less than 2/1 in 5 consecutive races, but has failed in 4 of them. Jorge Navarro 35% with beaten favorites. 6-Miss Stalwart may be fastest early but has only beaten 1 horse home in last 2. Drops from 20K for Dale Romans, 32% down +2 classes. Using these 3.
RACE 4: More favorites, sigh. 1-MILBRA won 3 back vs Optional Claimers, has a 5-3-1-0 record at today’s distance, and Trainer Maragh is off to a hot start at the meet. 6-Sherry Angel should be stalking the pace today from outside and is second of a layoff. Won at this level 3 back. 3-Jamie’s Dancer has only 3 career wins but has 30 ITM in 61 starts. Using top two in Pick 5.
RACE 5: We end the early chalkfest with 6-FIRST DISTINCTION, 30% first off the claim for Saffie Joseph. Won by 13 lengths 3 back , was 3rd of 8 last out as favorite. 4-Beauty of a Day has been 2nd last two at level, switches to Jose Ortiz and goes route to sprint back to a distance she’s 5-2-1-1 at. 2-Para Vivir drops from 16K, goes turf to dirt (37% for Barboza, who is 35% at the meet so far) won at 10K level two back. Using these 3 in Pick 5.
Pick 5 Ticket: 2,5/1,3,7/1,2,6/1,6/2,4,6 $54 investment for a $.50 play
RACE 6: 5-SOLDAT THE TOP, by my 2011 Kentucky Derby pick Soldat, is a FTS for Chad Brown who was a $300K April purchase. The Dam has 2 turf winners from first 2 starters. Brown 22% debuting on turf. 6-Smarty Smart has a pair of 3rds at Laurel on firm and yielding turf. 7-Galileo’s Affair goes dirt to turf for Trainer Armando De la cerda, who is having a great meet and he and Saw are 4 of last 8 together.
RACE 7: Taking a big shot here with 11-SHADES OF NIGHT, who has started on turf only one time, wasn’t embarrassed that day as he beat half the field. Making first start for Trainer Rohan Crichton, 7 of his last 15 starters making first start for him. First start in 11 months, Crichton 20% +90 days away. 7-Uncle Gio was 2nd last race vs MC 40K, highest BRIS speed figs of group. 4-Frontier Market makes 2nd career start for Chad Brown, 27%, and was 2nd in debut.
RACE 8: 8-STORMIN CHARLOTTE is first off the claim for Joseph, and is actually a trainer re-claim, an angle I really love. Gets Castellano aboard. 1-Pillango is first off the claim for Marcus Vitali, who is on fire at the meet so far(12-5-0-1) and I know Rusty Whittingham will be playing this one! 6-Lil Smartiepants has early speed and won last out vs 8K Claimers.
Pick 3 races 6-8: 3,5,6,7/4,7,11/1,8 $24 for a $1 play.
RACE 9: Ughh, running out of time so only picks for next 3 races.
RACE 10: 7-6-4
RACE 11: 8-10-6-2
