On Sunday, we’re headed back out to Santa Anita, where we’ve got FREE PICKS & ANALYSIS from our friend and returning guest handicapper Brett Strong (@Storiesdub).
We thank Brett for his thorough writeup today. He has become a regular on DanonymousRacing.com and his California-based racing selections (and other interspersed sports selections) are now featured here every Sunday. Good luck to everyone playing along today!
Take it away, Brett…
Back out at Santa Anita on what is kind of “not much to do” Sunday. Some really nice betting races today so hopefully some good scores can com as well. Enjoy your Sunday and hopefully we can see some W’s!
Race 1- 1-12-6-9
Well, well… Starting the day off with a good betting race here. McBoomer is a good value down on the inside. Can’t say this one doesn’t like to win. Speed can hold on the SA turf so forwardly placed is where to be. Not a huge backer of the jock but he wins at almost 20%… The two Ellis runners should be ready to go as well. I think Quinette is better but don’t like being stuck that far out. Tough choice. I’ll finish with Puglisi on Margie’s Minute. Comes back down, has a win here, only thing is Jones is cold right now. Will be a big price though.
Race 2- 1-2-6
Going to stick to the inside again here with Radio Silent. Finds a group it can beat on a slight turn back and keeps Bejarano on in a 6 horse field…. Unusually Big is an interesting runner for Sherman. Talamo jumps on and they add blinkers. A good choice coming off a decent layoff. Not burning it up in workouts but a steady pattern. Solis has done well with the mounts recently and gets a Maiden dropping into Claimers first time. Not a great price but a contender nonetheless.
Race 3- 3-2-6
Candy Boss looks very interesting here. Works have steadily improved off debut and stays at the same distance. The two Peter Miller first timers have a big shot here as well. I like Jeana Baby just slightly better because of the post at this distance.
Race 4- 3-4-7
Looks on peer to be a two horse race between Amberella and Ipray. I’ll put Ipray slightly ahead with Bejarano on board but it’s not by much. This just isn’t a very good race in general. Amberella gets a slight cutback in distance which should help here and Lopez should definitely send for the lead and not look back. Similarly how he did on this one two back. Easter Fever is the best of the rest but that’s not saying a ton.
Race 5- 12-9-8
Lutine Belle has been running facing much tougher competition and I think this is more the level where this one fits. Can’t seem to make any headway in graded stakes company and its last win came at the same level as this race. Gets the second try down the hill after finishing 8th in the Monrovia. It was not necessarily a terrible 8th as they only finished 4 lengths back. Minks Aprise, another Hollendorfer entry is my next choice. Draws a favorable post position, has been working well and gets the services of solid turf jockey Flavien Prat. Has two tries already down the hill and one of those was a win. Miss Double D’Oro will round out the top three. I’m a backer of DVD riding on the grass and this one’s two tries down the hill have resulted in a win and a second place finish. And the second place finish was only by a nose. There are two wild cards in this race and those are the two Euros, My Year Is A Day and Moanin. My Year gets Blanc on board which I like and Moanin gets Lasix for the first time in only its third start stateside.
Race 6- 1-4-5-8
Not a great race to kick off the late pick 4. With that said, I’m going to look to Charlie My Love down on the inside to get it done first out. Had a nice work in preparation for this and the six furlong trip is quite manageable for a first timer. Gallagher is winning at a 25% rate and finds a weak group here. Lady Wedge sees the lowest level so far in the career and should be in the mix. Black Clover takes the blinkers off which is a positive move for the trainer and fits with this group. Wouldn’t be shocked. Blazeinblairsden has been consistent with speed figures but not sure if this is the level that it can get the win.
Race 7- 2-4-3
Texas Two Step has been throwing darts in the mornings since last out. Gets a solid cutback in distance which Miller has positive ratings going route to sprint. Can’t get caught too far back on the break here so I hope Prat sends early. Eighty Three is an interesting runner here. Jacobson is 0’fer so far out here so part of me wants to see a win before I bet one of his runners but this one has the chance to be the first. Speed figures are very competitive, has shown the ability to win versus similar company and gets the services of veteran Gary Stevens. Won’t put on top but also won’t leave out of the pick four. Kafister could get to the winner’s circle as I’m sure Bejarano will ride this one through the wire. A string of almosts at this level and has the chance to get it done on the jockey change. Will probably be a short price though.
Race 8- 13-7-10-5
Another nice betting race. Big field and plenty of options to look at. Mulhall spots runners well and this one fits here at a nice price. Has to find a way to save some ground breaking from this far out. Sizzlin Joe has some solid connections when they hook up between Banjo and Carava. Storm Comin Thru has the potential to come storming through the lane if this one goes fast early. Expect Prat to move down inside early and try to make a late run. Marty Jones has a couple shots today to get off the goose egg and Zip The Monkey has a solid chance. I like the post draw to get out early and early speed seems to hold well on the Santa Anita turf course.
Race 9- 7-12-8
Puype drops this one in and is 71% when dropping two or more classes. Gets capable rider in Talamo and is a large price on the morning line. Gnarly Dude and Sir Barclay are both solid contenders who get solid riders and fit at this level. Both should be lower prices so I’m hoping George’s Main Man gets it done.
