Today, we’re headed out to Oklahoma City, OK, for Oklahoma Derby Day at Remington Park. To get us through the loaded card, our friend returning guest handicapper James McCool (@jmac9571) has been kind enough to share FREE PICKS & ANALYSIS for the entire card.
James is a great guy and tweets out some really nice photos from the track too. Give him a follow on Twitter! Take it away, James…
Well, it’s the biggest day of the meet, Oklahoma Derby Day at Remington Park! So, let me start by saying I am always honored for Dan to have me. We have a very good card for wagering today — 7 stakes races are carded and topped by the Oklahoma Derby, that drew an overflow field (14 starters) for the first time since 1991.
The late pick 4 will be an all-stakes affair as well as the pick 3 that will feature the Derby, Oaks, and Sprint. The weather has been nice so it won’t be an issue. The track has been speed bias some this year. Last year we were all surprised the way Broadway Empire got away with the suicide pace and wire job he pulled off. It was the first such in the past 9 Derby’s I had attended. However you dice it up this is an great card with ample wagering opportunities for some money to be had!
Now before we breakdown the races, we want to wish everyone the best of luck! If you play or have thoughts let us know and follow our on track thoughts and photo’s @jmac9571 best of luck friends!
Race 1 OC20k/SAL 15k 7f
#6 Frederico: Is making his 2nd start of the meet and with the class drop, he faced Nates Mineshaft in the last 15 days ago. He has the speed to get to the lead from this spot. Since I will be a guest in this owner’s suite on Derby day, he’s my pick.
#3 Steelman Run: Stepping back up in class and has failed to score in 2014. However Karl Broberg is 27% off the claim, adds blinkers for this one. Colby Hernandez has come up from Louisiana this week and won 3 Friday night. That makes him appealing.
#1 Diamond of Blue: Claimed for 32k by Autry for Landers at Delmar in his last. He is your morning line favorite and with 7 wins you see why. My concern is this will be his first dirt start. Will he like the RP dirt strip?
#5 Fuzzy Logic: Well welcome to Remington Rosie! She has the mount for Asmussen. Had a nice win last out at this distance. The 78 Beyer was a lifetime high and 10 better than his last start. Makes his 2nd start off the layoff.
Race 2 F Clm 7500 N2L 5-1/2 f
#5 Delightful Delila: Just broke Maiden at this tag, JR Caldwell has been red hot of late and with Loveberry back up and the combo are 33% at RP from 24 runners.
#4 Dakamo Denia: This mare has been running in the higher ups of the state bred ranks, but the figs are way better than this bunch with a lifetime 64 Beyer.
Tournado Lynie: Makes his 2nd start of the meet and Vazquez gets back up. Drops from the 15k tag and posted a nice 5f work on the 19th.
#11 Finish With Style: Got out to quick start and faded to 3rd last out at this level 2ndstart off the layoff for Randy Morse with Glen Murphy back in the irons.
Race 3 FS Md Sp Wt 60k 5-1/2
#9 Sly Okie: Theses connections are on their game when it comes to State bred ranks. Closed fast for first start to get up for 2nd while earning a 48 Beyer.
#1 Reenlist: Draws the rail after getting out front in debut and nodded for 2nd. The Beyer for the effort was a 40.
#3 Ms Morris Code: ran 3rd behind the 1 in the last race while being bet as the favorite for the Von Hemel Barn. Makes 4th start and has improved each time out 20,37,40 Beyer’s.
#11 Chandra: Making debut here for capable connections. Has a nice string of works. Kari Craddock is 20% with 2 year olds.
Race 4 Kip Deville Stakes 6f
#3 Bayered: Connections feel good about this one and I would too after breaking maiden by 11-1/2 lengths at Saratoga and posting a 90 Beyer. Our friend Clark Brewster had a very fine Saratoga and his is capable of the race 4& 5 double. Rosie is back up.
#1 Shotgun Cowboy: The CR Trout runner debuted here on opening night and I remember it well. In a state bred maiden he was ridden out beating a field of 11 by 12 plus lengths in :58 flat! Look at the work tab since and you will see he is ready.
#7 American Sailor: Another Autrey / Landers Delmar runner. Won 2nd start at Delmar while posting a 79 beyer. Wondering if Loveberry made the choice getting on this one.
#2 Nublado Bling: The Texas bred enters this one off the stakes 2nd place run at Lone Star Park with restricted company posting a 76 beyer.
Race 5 Remington Green 1-1/8m T
#6 Gentleman’s Kitten: Well I’m sure I don’t have to tell you why these connections need be respected? Nice to see the Ramsey’s runner here coming off the win at Ellis first back off the layoff while posting a 95 beyer. Has won at the distance and should be right near the pace in this one.
#1 Shinning Copper: Same connections as the last race sends this one out who has won 2 in a row since the claim from Pletcher. The beyer’s for those were 86, 92 are his best. Should be the one to catch but owns a 0-2 record at the distance.
#2 Broadway Empire: Last year’s Oklahoma derby winner returns for first turf try. He is another speedster who will fight with the 1 for the lead. If he can carry the speed this distance on the grass is the questions. He has the pedigree for this. But he has not tried this distance since last year’s derby.
#4 Greengrassofyoming This one is a closer who should be able to pick up some pieces. If he gets back to his spring form he can be a factor in a race that should have plenty of pace. Brian Hernandez in to ride.
Race6 Flashy Lady Stakes 6f
#3 Dancin’ Lil: Danny Caldwell, who we might mention has won 3 owners titles in a row! (Remington, Oaklawn & Prairie Meadows) And is looking to repeat for the 3rd time here, Before that last turf attempt she had 4 in a row including a stakes at Prairie Meadows.
#6 Lasting Bubbles: 4 for 6 winner this year has been off since July and may need one. Has won 6 of 9 at today’s distance. Posted a 95 beyer last time out at Lone Star.
#4 Snappy Girl: I sure won’t leave this one off my pick 3 tickets. Broberg sends out another speedster. Has not yet carried that speed 6 furlongs yet. Has been on the board 7 out of 7 this year.
#8 Brilliant Rescue: This 125k purchase has been off since last year. Won her first 2 at Churchill. Posted a very impressive 89 debut beyer. She has the class in this one.
Race7 Ladies on the Lawn 7-1/2f T
#4 Okie Nova: Again the Nolen and Richter family are tough in the State ranks. This one makes 2nd start off the layoff while running 3rd last out posting a 75 beyer for that effort. Work on the 16th says he’s ready.
#3 Ridgeofstone: This one comes in with back to back wins at Cby. Has wired them in the last 2 and posted a 85 beyer in the last on Aug-8. Has a 0-3 record at RP.
#8 Sooner Superstar: Won last race here here at this distance in the Red Earth stakes at 10-1 odds. Posted a 85 beyer. Has 3 wins on this turf from 8 starts.
#9 Bringinginthelute: Rosie gets this mount. Makes only 2nd turf attempt, but two back in first attempt ran a respectable 3rd while posting a 70 beyer, then came back on the off track to post a 75 career high.
Race 8 Oklahoma Derby 1-1/8m This is a race I will go deep in on the pick 3 and pick 4’s as favorites don’t often win the derby here. This race a appears to be one that could have a hot pace.
#1 Away Game: Such a tough race, but he has won 3 of 4 at the distance and with what could be a brutal pace I think he could sit off of it and make his move. He has won the last 2 and Luzzi has had every mount. But this is a big time class jump and might just be the spot to try it.
#5 Widcat Red: Now this one is the class of this bunch, he has started in the Kentucky Derby and ran 2nd in the Florida Derby. He is also a grade 2 & 3 winner, Ships in off a sharp work and enters with a lifetime top beyer of 101. Has the style to sit close to the pace as long as he doesn’t get sucked into a hot one.
#9 Charge Now: Comes out of the Grade 1 Travers makes only his 7th start so he has every right to keep improving. He is out of Tiznow so the distance should not be a concern Junior Alvarado comes in to stick with this one for the powerful WinStar Farm operation.
#11 Declan’s Fast Cat: He is one that will make one run and if it all fall apart upfront he could have a similar outcome as he had in the Super Derby. They were considering the Indiana Derby but opted for this what appears to be a tougher race. 5 of 7 board hits this year.
#6 Bay of Biscay: Connections of last year’s winner sends this one who has won at the distance and was a 750k purchase. One I have to consider.
Race 9 Remington Park Oaks 1-1/16m A lot of mystery to this race, many shippers and many who are capable. Tough field to read here.
#5 America: the Mott shipper for Bobby Flay comes in off 3 grade 1 attempts. She should like the class relief here. Out of A.P. Indy so the distance should not be a question. 1 win but going on class in this one.
#4 Shanon Nicole: Comes in off a very nice win at Indiana 2 wins at the distance and her last out was a career beyer of 90. She has a pace stalking style that should play well in this one concern would be that she has been on the shelf since July 23rd.
#3 Haveyougoneaway: price shopping, wouldn’t it be nice to have this one on your pick 4 and get the win? Why Loveberry opts off the better horse “on paper” the 7. He rode this horse on Remington debut to an easy ridden out win. Posting a 78 beyer. Since has come back with a pair of bullet works a :46.4 on the 9th and :58.2. Could he be sitting on a live one?
#6 Lady Fifty Two: Hollendorfer ships this one in off the win at Emerald downs Went After 8 sprint attempts they went the 1-1/8 mile distance and won. Does pick up a top local jockey in Berry.
Race 10 Remington Sprint Cup 6f It’s fitting that we close the card with this race as I think it’s the best one. You can make a case for many in here and I wouldn’t disagree.
#3 Ivan Fallunovalot: So you think I’ve gone crazy? If you know me or followed our Oaklawn write ups, you know I have been high on this horse since Tom Durant brought him to Oaklawn and lost him for the 25k tag while winning. Well he’s not lost since and has banked a 100k since that claim. He enters off the win in the David Vance stakes here on opening weekend. Another class test today but his style to sit just off the pace, in a race with some real speedsters might get him his 5th win in a row.
#1-1A Wine Police/ Micro Margarita: Wine police won last year’s edition comes in off the win at Zia Park and has 3 wins at the distance. And worked here Monday with an eye popping 5f :58 work while going out 6f in 1:11.1. Mico Margareta comes in off the win in West Virginia stakes win while posting a beyer of 102. 9 out of 12 in the money at the distance.
#6 Heitai: One thing you can count on is him getting out front, but in this race there will be plenty of pace, Has been off since June but the work tab is strong including a 1:11.3 here on the 19th. Has won 6 out of 7 this year. But only 2 of 7 at to days distance. That 1 loss this year was his only attempt outside Louisiana.
#7 Alsvid: Has been a favorite of mine since the first time I saw him run. Owns the fields highest lifetime beyer of 109. The winner of 10 lifetime has only won 3 of those in the last 2 years. Has not raced since June and has 1 win from 5 starts this year. Feels like he has tailed off of late.
I have to thank you if you took the time to read all of this. One thing for sure it will be a beautiful day at Remington! After reading this take in mind I play a lot of pick 3’s and Pick 4’s. If you have any questions feel free to reach out, or if you have different thoughts please share. Follow will get plenty of updates and pictures out as the day unfolds.
As always, good luck friends! @jmac9571 (James McCool)
