On Sunday, we’re headed back out to Del Mar, where we’ve got FREE PICKS & ANALYSIS from our friend and returning guest handicapper Brett Strong (@Storiesdub).
We thank Brett for his thorough writeup today. He was a regular on DanonymousRacing.com on Sundays at Saratoga and we’re thankful to have had him back with us today! Good luck to everyone playing along today.
Take it away, Brett…
Glad to be back in action on a beautiful Sunday! Good luck to everyone and enjoy your day!
Race 1- 7-3-5
Guessed Right won last out at Keeneland in what the notes say as in driving fashion. Comes to Hess and he puts Desormeaux his go to rider on this one immediately. Hess is 40% on drops off a win and the front running style of this one while getting a solid turn back in distance should get him in the winner’s circle again. Desert Madam is no stranger at this distance and Gutierrez has been riding well so far this meet. Has competitive numbers and should be a nice price.
Race 2- 4-5-1
Dressed to a T gets its second try over the Del Mar turf course. Run style bodes well here as this one will likely be forwardly placed and ready to make a run down the stretch. Put on a solid performance first time out and I look for this one to show enough improvement to win here. Mike Smith gets aboard California Curl who goes for the first time on the grass. If this one takes to the turf, should be in the mix as Smith has been lights out recently and Harrington seems to have runners ready to go going first time on turf. With two solid favorites, could be the price to look for.
Race 3- 5-3-7
Tester looked to be off form in its last two starts so I’m hoping the time off for this one will help and can get back into previous form. Not a tough group so very possible this one jumps back into the winner’s circle. If Lopez can put this one in the right place mid race, will have a solid chance to come late. I’m giving a solid shot to Okaad. Drops in competition and gets blinkers put back on which should help focus this one back to the task.
Race 4- 8-5-6
I’m going to say this is Baffert’s race to lose. I’m using 3 of his runners here and putting the longest shot of the trio on top. Above Board gets to route for the second time in only so many starts and Baffert shows up with good numbers in second time routes. Hopefully Pedroza will show up and give this one a solid ride and put a big payout up. Obviously Baffert still has hopes for this runner running in a MSW and not dropping into Claimers after a poor first showing.
Race 5- 8-7-1
Anthonysgotgame switches barns to O’Neil and ran decent last out in its first start. Meets a similar group and gets an extra furlong which I think could help. I like getting Gonzalez on here and this group is full of horses that just won’t win. Sticking with the lighter raced horses in this one. My third choice Resistanceisfutile has a sneaky chance with a Gutierrez at what will be a very nice price.
Race 6- 8-4-3
Oil is obviously the one to beat here but if I’m going to beat him, it will be with Bejarano on board with Native Treasure. Draws a good post for a turf sprint has solid speed figures. My price play in this one jumps to Blanc riding for Wong on Fiestys Cause. Didn’t run well on the grass the last time it went on turf but has shown the ability to win sprints and I’m a sucker for Blanc on the grass. If this one likes the surface at Del Mar, should be a contender.
Race 7- 2-6-5
Daring Darling has been doing well in preparation for its first start. Goes out for solid connections who win first out at a solid rate. Gets a good post and is the “other” Hollendorfer here. Sweet Halory gets in for O’Neil and has also prepped well for debut. O’Neil has done well with first timers and this one has a good shot.
Race 8- 1-7-2
With Pretty N Cool potentially being a heavy favorite, I looked down to the inside with a nice filly from the Hollendorfer barn. Has faced Pretty N Cool previously and didn’t give a nice showing but getting class relief could help this one turn the tables. Street Fancy comes in jumping up considerably in class but gets Mike “$” Smith and will be a huge price come post time. Has a shot to spring the upset.
Race 9- 4-7-2
Mulhall enters Wildcat Sailor here who puts blinkers on for a first try at a route distance. Has shown the ability to win and in this group with a bunch of horses who don’t seem to be able to win much, should be very competitive. Gets the services of a solid jockey in Nakatani and will be a solid price. Hopefully the added distance will get Sir Cal back into form. Ran well at a higher level at this distance on the grass two back and will be there with a shot. The favorite is a nice runner but has only crossed the finish line once in fifteen tries and I feel like can definitely be beat. I put in my top three because I never count out Banjo to finish the card with a win.
