Saturday, November 7, 2015
On Saturday, we’re headed back out to Del Mar, where we’ve got FREE PICKS & ANALYSIS from our friend and returning guest handicapper Billy Blake (@BillyBlake26).
Billy is an NHC qualifier and is currently a producer with XBTV, based at Santa Anita. Starting in November, he’ll be providing picks from California every Saturday. Be sure to give him a follow on Twitter when you get a chance. Take it away, Billy…
Race 1: 3-6-4
#3 Let’s Meet in Rio lost to another Baffert horse in Dr. Dorr in debut. Slow start didn’t help, but now the top pilot for the barn gets the call. #6 Sorryaboutnothing a $220,000 purchase from the O’Neill barn. Can’t discount this son of Repent with the way his two-year-olds are running. #4 Esposito appears to be part of pace, solid works since the debut effort.
Race 2: 5-6-4
#5 Thundering Gale has had a couple months to get acclimated to West Coast. Eventful trip down the hill last month and gets back to the Del Mar turf. Sneaky at 5-1 on the line. #6 Odisseia has speed and holds a pace advantage against these. Problem is she’s still looking for her first win in the states. #4 With a Twist brings it every time. No reason why this seven-year-old can’t get a piece against her younger competition.
Race 3: 7-6-2
Trying to beat the experienced horses with #7 Tough But Nice. Steady works, will offer some value in a wide open race. #6 Mike’s Benchmark stretches out an eighth of a mile Saturday after the near miss in the debut. Benefits if speed falls apart. #2 Star Express will take money based on two straight runner-up finishes. Unsure about 6 1/2 furlongs for this gelding.
Race 4: 6-4-2
#6 Fritz Johansen alternates good and bad races. Strong sign that Bejarano sticks with this gelding and Glatt has put two sub 1:00– 5 furlong workouts in him. #4 What a View offers some pace and got a confidence booster last month. #2 Somethings Unusual gave Forest Chatter all he could handle down the hill. Always collects a check, even if not for the win.
Race 5: 7-8-3
It’s been a tough year for #7 Ice Cream Truck, but this well traveled gelding worked too good to ignore Oct. 30 and Valdez had a chance to get a feel for him last out. Should get first run on the closers. #8 Celebrity Status drops in for a $16,000 tag after burning money around one turn at Santa Anita. #3 Northern Iowa also dips in for $16k, seven pound bug Ty Kennedy worked a good trip out before, won’t be surprised to see that again.
Race 6: 1-2-7
#1 Causeway Carolyn second off a layoff for Gaines, her race two back (also second off layoff) win at Del Mar with career best Beyer. #2 Havanna Belle reunites with Bejarano, but will have to find some running room down the lane. #7 Spirit of Ten has the speed to set it up for stablemate, but she is live considering her 2-for-2 record where the surf meets the turf.
Race 7: 8-2-5
#8 Melatonin can sit the perfect stalking trip with the speed to his inside. Gelding is capable on either surface. #2 Prime Issue wins at a 33% clip, but hasn’t been in action since February and under the impression Hollendorfer is using this race to stretch him out. Last time the time to score with #5 All Run. Baltas clearly getting the best out of him and even though he won’t offer the same value he did before, he’s a contender.
Race 8: 3-7-5
#3 Sweet as a Rose jumps in class yes, but Van Dyke can save ground with this post. Only two times she missed the board was when she dumped the jockey at the start and hit the rail in the stretch. Upset pick. #7 Chaulk O Lattey may very well lead every step of the way for the killer Bs. Let’s see how she handles the extra sixteenth. #5 Beat of the Drum stole it on the lead before, could do it yet again.
Race 9: 2-10-1
#2 Small Town Shuffle missed in this condition two back. New pilot and decent price 8-1 in a race without many opinions. #10 Purrin Proud plays catch me if you can. Can hang on for share. #1 Superside in all likelihood will be forwardly placed from the rail in second career start.
