On Saturday, we’re headed back out to Belmont with FREE PICKS & ANALYSIS from our good friend, Joe Schaffer (@cyph718).
We thank Joe for putting together a picks sheet for us today. We invite you to play along and don’t forget to give Joe a follow on Twitter when you get a moment. Good luck!
Tough race to start off the day. Many ways to look at this one. Angel Code ran huge last time and could just blow this field out at a square price, especially with Chad Brown and Jacobson taking $. It is hard to ignore Bossy Saratoga and the way Tom Morley has this one going since taking over as trainer. Jacobson sending out Tiz May West for the first time could also be a major player in here. I’m not sure what to make of Chad Brown’s horse off the big layoff. I will use in pick 5 just to b safe.
5 Angel Code
6 Bossy Saratoga
2 Tiz May West
Pick 5 play 2,4,5,6/3,4,6/ 1,2,4,5 / 6 / 3,4,5,6,9 ($120)
*If some scratch I will use Big Business as well in Race 4
I’m worried about the pace in here a little bit but I’m hoping Street Swagg can sit just behind the Maker horse on the stretch out and tackle him around the turn. Last race is a toss at 6F off the layoff and the one before that he ran up against buzz saw Zivo. Three starts back was at this distance right around this time of year last year and it was a good performance. Steve also has route speed and may be a problem for Swagg. Betweenhereandcool is tough to read. Last was awful and I wonder how Jacobson can do better than Assmussen with this one but he can rate and move on the strong pace late.
3 Street Swagg
There is plenty of pace in here for someone to come from behind. Barbara’s Smile broke her maiden at this distance and will get a ground saving trip. Stage Name adds Blinkers and has faced better. (Note C. Velasquez not riding the Linda Rice horse) Share N Stone is a BOMB who made up 7 lengths in her turf debut and now gets a big time upgrade at jockey.
1 Barbara’s Smile
4 Stage Name
2 Share N Stone
Saratoga Snacks was just warming up in a 6.5F at Saratoga last month but should be primed and ready to go for Bill Mott and this big time trainer switch should work wonders. Big Business is nearly unbeatable at Belmont and will certainly be in the mix today. Escapefromreality scratched Thursday to try and wire this field today.
6 Saratoga Snacks
3 Big Business
This is a race you must spread around in. Many of these horses are dropping in class and haven’t won in some time. In handicapping this one I was looking for the ones who seem to be in the best form. Happy Fella has a win at this distance and surface 4 back and should get a good trip at a big price. Saez and Wilkes are 3/6 together . Cheyenne Nation comes off a victory and should be in the mix for Rudy Rodriguez and Emkannaat chased a runaway lone speed winner last out while taking a ton of money. Should be a factor here.
4 Happy Fella
5 Cheyenne Nation
9 Karakorum Legend
Another tough race on this card. You have to figure that $340K filly Love and Marriage will break her maiden sooner than later for Chad Brown. If you like her then you must use the 7 Place Card who finished one length behind her in her last start and you get 5x the odds. Miz Lee has been in the money in all 3 starts for Barclay Tagg and Forensic has been in the mix as well for Shug McGaughey .
4 Love and Marriage
6 Miz Lee
7 Place Card
Fizzy Pink actually went off as the favorite against Sky Painter last time but was pinched at the break and didn’t compete. Sky Painter just missed in that race to Invading humor who came back and won a big one last week. Miss Melinda ran third to impressive Euro trained by Chad Brown who came back to win with ease this week.
8 Fizzy Pink
5 Sky Painter
11 Miss Melinda
Hard to think that La Verdad could turn tables on Agroetera after the thrashing last time out in Ballerina but something must have been wrong because La Verdad is much better than she showed. It’s a two horse race in my opinion but really may just be a one horse race. Merry Meadow picks up a minor award.
1 Artemis Agroetera
6 La Verdad
2 Merry Meadow
The works on my top two selections really caught my eye and also the fact that Maragh abandons McLaughlin’s Frosted to ride the Tagg firster. Skill Not Luck will be a factor if he is anywhere near as fast as his father and Chad Brown as his trainer doesn’t hurt.
3 Street Jersey
1a Take Cover (entry)
5 Skill Not Luck
Dubai Sky took a ton of money in debut for a barn that barely wins first out. Then had a brutal trip and still finished 3rd. Escondido had trouble as well in his debut for Todd Pletcher and this one should benefit from that experience. Grey Wizard is a Kittens Joy colt that goes first time for Chad Brown.
6 Dubai Sky
1 Grey Wizard
