We’re heading out to where the turf meets the surf on this Sunday afternoon, for a great day of action at Del Mar. Spencer Luginbuhl (@handi_capper) has his picks for all nine races on the card.
Not only is Spencer our Sunday California handicapper, he’s a member of NYRA’s “Bets Squad” at Saratoga! Be sure to give him a follow on twitter, and check him out at Saratoga if you’re in the area.
Take it away, Spencer!
Special thanks to John for letting me continue my dream of giving my picks as a public handicapper

#6 Passion for Papa: I like this daughter of Papa Clem ran right back for a near miss at an open 20K claiming level. Hoping the cold jockey numbers will help our price. She should be forwardly placed and looking for Pena to press the pace.
#1 Mining Diamonds: They finally drop this filly after failing to break through the 40K level 1 allowance condition. Key angle for her is this is her first time in for a tag. She did break her maiden in an off the turf event and those sometimes come back as weaker races.
#3 Wealthy Shipman: The Hollendorfer barn is off to a cold start. This mare has been in the exacta the last four races. She won this type of race four back down the hill with an excellent 84 Beyer
#10 Sturdy One: She has improving Beyers her last three races all at this class level. When horses cant break through a certain level over 3-4 starts I believe they need a slight drop in class but this is a favorite I won’t play on the winning end but underneath is fine
#9 Blissful rose: Maiden special weight droppers are some of my favorite bets to make in maiden claiming races. Now she didn’t race all that well but Blinkers are going on and the surface switch are positive changes in my book, and we should get a price.
#3 Majestic Diva: the other class angle for me is finding horses that just haven’t lost yet for the specific level this being 20K. She seems to be improving every race and might be able to surprise at a price.
#4 Miss Sunset: Big horse for course angle as she is 2-2 over the Del Mar course which to me is a huge advantage over some horses who haven’t even run on the course yet. She is also a listed two-time stake winner on turf here’s hoping she can transfer that to dirt.
#8 Dreamy Gal: Heres another with a maiden breaker at Del Mar last year. She has been off all this time, but the works to me are decent and might fetch an overlaid price due to the layoff.
#5 Pitching: One of my favorite turf trainers is Thomas Proctor it’s almost like people forget how good his turf runners are. This son of Scat Daddy is meant to stretch out and like the jockey switch to Van Dyke.
#3 Encumbered: Violence was a sire highly talked about in the sales towards the end of last year, and this one sold for 200K+. I respect Callaghan, and if he starts this one in a stake right off the bat, he must have some ability.
#5 Taylor and Burton: I love the last two workouts for this Pioneerof the Nile filly. Brian Koriner has excellent R.O.I. with first-time starters as well as two-year-olds 3-1 morning line would make her my best bet of the day.
#6 Katherine: Another with a big time work coming into this race a bullet best of 75. Sire is solid with two year old debut runners, and Bejarano gets the mount.
