Another great Saturday of racing is on the schedule at Del Mar. Today’s feature is the Best Pal Stakes, featuring up-and-coming two-year-old Instagrand. That will be the third race out of ten on the program.
Mike Bench (@mikebench1991) will be providing FREE picks & analysis of all ten races on the card. He’ll be handicapping Del Mar every Saturday for the rest of the meet.We thank Mike for providing his thoughts on the card, and encourage you to give him a follow on twitter.
Take it away, Mike!
Suggested Pick Five: 1,4,7 / 3 / 1 / 1,2,3,7,9 / 1,2,3,6 ($30 for 50c)
1st: #1 Don’t Stalk Me 2nd: #7 Memorable Election 3rd: #4 Colormemoney
#1 Don’t Stalk Me (7/2 ML) – Looks to get a nice setup for Roman/O’Neill in the opener. Showed a spark when they added blinkers, earning career high Beyer, can fire that again.
#7 Memorable Election – Was 5th in the race the top pick comes out of but was making his CA debut. Can move forward 2nd off layoff with Peter Miller.
#4 Colormemoney – Won nicely from just off the pace last time. Throwing him in against winners but this looks a soft enough spot for a repeat.
Suggested Pick Four: 3,6,7 / 1 / 1,2,3,7,9 / 1,2,3,6 ($30 for 50c)
1st: #3 Red Shelby 2nd: #7 Laynee 3rd: #6 Dis Smart Cat
#3 Red Shelby (5/1 ML) – Gets in with a postage stamp weight of 110 pounds and looks like the main speed in here. She is a winner on the turf and faces a so-so group for the level.
#7 Laynee – Drops in class today into claiming but I can’t but help that she wants longer than 5f. She hasn’t been running too well at this distance because she falls too far back. Same could happen.
#6 Dis Smart Cat – Claimed by Doug O’Neill and put on the turf. Like when good connections try something new. Seems a logical spot if she’s right.
1st: #1 Instagrand 2nd: #4 Mason Dixon 3rd: #2 Owning
#1 Instagrand (½ ML) – Won his debut as impressively as can be. This $1.2 million purchase has tons of speed and likely to use it from the rail. Tougher race but should handle it.
#4 Mason Dixon – Probably has the best closing kick in the race and could clunk up for exotics. Slow finish time last time but at least he got the job done.
#2 Owning – Professional on debut, will likely have to come off the pace. Can he do that? Perhaps but he won’t have the cozy outside trip he had last time.
1st: #2 Tenga Rhythm 2nd: #3 Veiled Heat 3rd: #9 Star of Kobol
#2 Tenga Rhythm (7/2 ML) – The best of a bad bunch here. Has placed all five times without winning which doesn’t inspire confidence on top but figures are best.
#3 Veiled Heat – Has had a lot of chances and another that has been placing but not winning. This is as soft as she’ll ever see though.
#9 Star of Kobol – Maybe the stretch out does the trick here. Showed some interest in her debut for Eurton but that was only vs Los Al maidens.
1st: #2 Meal Ticket 2nd: #1 Wind Tartare 3rd: #6 Siberian Iris
#2 Meal Ticket (3/1 ML) – Was unlucky to lose at this condition last time when encountering tons of trouble. Clean trip for this filly in form and she’s right there.
#1 Wind Tartare – Moves out of the Chad Brown barn which isn’t a great thing, but Baltas has a knack with shippers. Lots of potential out east, maybe west is where she needs.
#6 Siberian Iris – Usually places more than she wins and has a 2 ½ month layoff to deal with. Should be in the mix again but a beatable ML favorite.
1st: #2 The Aurelia Factor 2nd: #3 Lesley’s Song 3rd: #8 Vangogo
#2 The Aurelia Factor (5/2 ML) – Training very well at Del Mar for her debut for Bob Baffert. Very very fast pedigree, sired by The Factor out of a sprint winning G3 mare. Looks good to me here.
#3 Lesley’s Song – Ran a forgettable race on debut for Jerry Hollendorfer, but his 2yo’s are firing. Espinoza takes the mount and the blinkers go on. Expecting better.
#8 Vangogo – Moves from the Luis Mendez to Doug O’Neill barn. Did not stay very well in a hot maiden last but should be prominent.
Suggested Pick Four Play: 1,3,4,10 / 6 / 6,8,9,10 / 1,6,7,10 ($32 for 50c)
1st: #4 Pulpit Rider 2nd: #10 Hey Negrita 3rd: #3 Luminoso
#4 Pulpit Rider (6/1 ML) – Stakes winning filly gets to try n1x since those wins were against Cal Breds. Is good enough to win in open company and loves this flat mile.
#10 Hey Negrita – Ran well in a similar event at Ellis Park. This is tougher and will need the requisite improvement from her time in the Baltas stable. Turf beyers definitely eyecatching.
#3 Luminoso – Done zero wrong since stretched out on the turf, yet to run out of the exacta. Should present another good account of herself and must be included.
1st: #6 Burn Me Twice 2nd: #2 Papa Turf 3rd: #5 Braddock
#6 Burn Me Twice (7/2 ML) – Ran a quality 3rd against tough $20,000 claimers on opening day. Drops a notch and jockey performs well aboard the horse.
#2 Papa Turf – Sent to the lead last time, may be better with a target to chase. Ice cold jockey but did win the last race yesterday.
#5 Braddock – A main off the pace threat here coming off a win at Los Alamitos when protected. Has done very little wrong since Hollendorfer claim.
1st: #8 Sappho 2nd: #9 Dulce Ride 3rd: #6 Nonna Gianna
#8 Sappho (5/1 ML) – Ran a big race off the layoff despite pulling like crazy off slow pace. Faster pace should suit and best races have come at Del Mar.
#9 Dulce Ride – Ambitiously placed by Baltas off the maiden win in a G2 last time. Impressive maiden breaker with competitive beyer. In the mix.
#6 Nonna Gianna – Was wide off the slow pace last time, hoping she needed it. Should improve 2nd tme in the country and showed solid form in Italy.
1st: #6 Handsome John 2nd: #10 Hey Sal 3rd: #7 Silent Alarm
#6 Handsome John (5/2 ML) – Ran a much improved 2nd last time when dropped in class. Any further improvement should put him in the winners circle.
#10 Hey Sal – Dreadful on debut vs MSW. Makes the all important drop into maiden claiming and adds blinkers. Hopefully he can show more foot out of the gate.
#7 Silent Alarm – Ran 3rd the first two times at the level, a good standard to judge this race against. Should be right there again.
