Free Picks & Analysis — Who Do Ya Like?
Friday, October 5, 2018
There’s a great 9-race card today at Belmont Park, with the opener going off at 1:30 PM EDT. We’re happy to have Ed Piluso (@EdPiluso) providing picks & analysis of all 10 races! Ed’s a great young handicapper, who you’ll be able to find on the brand-new racing website, the Daily Gallop, which launched earlier in the week. You can also see Ed’s picks & analysis on his blog.
Best of luck to everyone following along!
Due to time constraints this week will be slightly different from previous. Today I will give my top 3 selections as normal and a analysis of the top selection in each race rather than the entire top 3. Let’s get to it!
Race 1: 2-4-3
#2 MONSTER BEA just missed last time out and the trainer has sent out horses finishing 2nd or better in 3 of 4 races here at Belmont on layoffs of 38 days or less. Bravo is back on today and I’m going for an upset in the first.
Race 2: 5-8-7
#5 BIZNESS BEAUTY has only run at this trip, has ascending speed figures that are comparable to the third choice and morning line favorite. Plus we get red hot Javier up, why not take a shot at 6/1 ML?
Race 3: 3-6-4
#3 END PLAY looks like a very live 12/1 ML longshot here. This gelding gets a nice amount of class relief here and in his two races this year has by no mean embarrassed himself. We get Manny Franco up on a horse who has run the best speed figures collectively in this crop. Going in on him to win and boxing him with the 2nd selection in an exacta as my plays of the day.
Race 4: 2-3-5
#2 AGGREGATOR just missed last time at this level running on from the 7 path at the Spa. Lezcano jumps back on and he’s rode this filly well, a better trip today can yield a win.
Race 5: 1-7-3
#1 MENSA MEMBER is coming out of a very competitive race at the Spa where she finished 2nd. Today we get red hot Javier up for Chad and Klaravich, deserved chalk and likely winner.
Race 6: 2-3-5
#2 ILLUDERE wasn’t able to get up last time at Saratoga after going 5 wide into the turn. Today we get a smaller (yet talented) field and Javier should be able to get him the trip. We see 3 solid works after that last race and I’m going against the favorite here.
Race 7: 2-8-1
#2 APPEALING BRIEFS ran two solid races at Saratoga and we see consistent works since. Cohen jumps back on today after a solid race at the trip last time out where the gelding just missed. He’s a nibbler by nature but I think he can get a win today.
Race 8: 1-9-2
#1 NO REGRETS ran a solid race last time out at Saratoga, that was a career high speed figure he earned that day. The last 5 races have been ascending speed figures and if he runs even remotely as well as last time out he should be able to win today.
Race 9: 7-8-10
#7 BARREL OF DESTINY has run consistently well but doesn’t have a lot to show for it. Today he goes to a career low level and gets a cut back in distance plus we get Irad up. His speed figures are the best of the field and the class relief today should be very welcomed.
