Free Picks & Analysis — Who Do Ya Like?
Saturday, February 24, 2018
There’s a nine-race card in Queens, New York this Saturday, headlined by the Franklin Square Stakes. It’ll be the third of nine races on the program, the first of which is scheduled to go off at 12:50 PM EST.
We’ve got Mike Mahon (@MikeMahonPA) with picks & analysis of the program. Mike’s been writing about New York racing for a while now, and we’re happy to have him back for the Aqueduct meet. Give him a follow on twitter if you can.
Good luck, and take it away, Mike!
Race 1, 1 Mile, Claiming $16,000
6 to win
6 Jacqueline D is a heavy favorite that offers an extremely small payout. I could imagine betting against her in this field. Look for her to get out front and cruise to an easy W.
Race 2, 1 Mile, Claiming $10,000
5 to win
I like 5 Arewehavingfunyet because I see 2 Perina’s Pride and 6 Milaya contesting out front and losing some steam around the turn. Arewehavingfunyet should be able to settle in comfortably and pick up the pieces for a mild upset.
Race 3, 6 Furlongs, Franklin Square Stake $100,000
1 to win
4 w 5 exacta
The marquee race of the card looks like it could also be an upset special – I’m taking 1 Velvet Trinni to win. She hasn’t won yet, but she draws the rail and like to be out front. I don’t think she’ll get too loose, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s able to distance herself enough and hold on. 4 Beautiful Buzz looks like a vulnerable favorite, as she struggled against a weaker field in her last out. 5 Aunt Babe looks horrendous on paper, but she ran well at this distance two back before trying a route last out.
Race 4, 6 1/2 Furlongs, Claiming $16,000
5 w 1
I like the angle on 5 Ouro Verde – she’s a speed horse on the upswing, taking a moderate step up in class. She should be able to break out in front of this field with little contention. Behind her I like 1 Desert Affair, who should be able to sit back and press until making her final push. It won’t be enough for a win, but she’ll land in the money.
Race 5, 6 1/2 Furlongs, Claiming $27,000
7 w 4
I’ll go with 7 Hard Hitter and 4 Sallisaw here.
Race 6, 1 Mile, Claiming $16,000
3 to win
I’m going with 3 Arbitrator here. He has been claimed a couple time in the past few months, and his inconsistency at home caused a bit of a dip in his last performance. I think he’ll be able to back on track this afternoon against moderate competition.
Race 7, 6 Furlongs, Maiden $55,000
1, 3 to win
I haven’t had a lot of luck playing the maidens this meet, and I don’t see that changing today. I’m inclined to go with a pair of first time starters with strong works and offering a moderate payout – 1 March Two Madness and 3 Walk of Fame.
Race 8, 6 1/2 Furlongs, Optional Claiming $80,000
5 w 3 w 2
5 Belleville Spring is my lock of the day, and offers a nice payout at 5/1 on the money line. He takes a pretty aggressive jump in class after breaking his maiden, and he scorched the track with last week’s work. He’s on the upswing and I’ll ride the wave. 2 Flash Drive took the same jump as Bellville Spring last out, and finished four back in fourth. He, too, likes to get out front but couldn’t do it at this level. He’ll most likely drift back to show this afternoon. I’ll put 3 Ultimateenticement in between.
Race 9, 6 Furlongs, Maiden Claiming $25,000
8 to win
I like 8 Tough Old Bird to pull off the mild upset to close out the card. It will be a bit of a challenge coming from the far outside when the turn is so close to the gate, but Tough Old Bird is a patient runner and should be able to settle in while her foes towards the front of the pack tire each other out. 7 Gypsy Joe looks temping, but she’s a speed horse that prefers to be out front. I don’t think she’ll be able to get there today, coming from the seven slot with a few other front runners in the field.
