Free Picks & Analysis — Who Do Ya Like?
Saturday, February 10, 2018
There’s a nine-race card in Queens, New York this Saturday, headlined by the Jimmy Winkfield Stakes. It drew a field of seven three-year-olds going six furlongs, and will go as the 8th race on the program. The first race will be at 12:50 PM EST.
We’ve got Mike Mahon (@MikeMahonPA) with picks & analysis of the program. Mike’s been writing about New York racing for a while now, and we’re happy to have him back for the Aqueduct meet. Give him a follow on twitter if you can.
Good luck, and take it away, Mike!
Race 1, 1 Mile, $44,000
3 w 1
I know it’s chalky, but these two are much better than the others.
Race 2, 1 Mile, Claiming $44,000
1 w 4
Race 3, 6 Furlongs, Maiden $60,000
2,4 exacta box
2 Throw the Fade ran well early in his first and only out. He could win today if his stamina has grown to match his ambition. If not, look for 4 Broadway Bandit – he’s a first timer from a precocious bloodline.
Race 4, 6 Furlongs, Optional Claiming $80,000
5 w 2
5 Angry Moon may cheer up a bit when he blows past this field and visits the winners circle for the first time in almost a year and a half. He struggled a bit in higher ranks, and performed well enough last out to at least demonstrate he belongs at this level. Today he faces a rather short field with not a lot of speed. 2 All Star Red took off the latter half of the summer through the fall, but returns today after six months and looks like he should be well positioned to finish in the money.
Race 5, 6 1/2 Furlongs, Allowance $50,000
6 w 7 w 1
6 Buddy Anthony is a speed horse climbing the ranks, switching to a red-hot jockey who’s won five of his last eleven. His odds a little shorter than I’d prefer, but it’s a fair risk against this field. Look for 7 Sicilia Mike to pass 1 Killybegs Captain along the final furlong.
Race 6, 7 Furlongs, Allowance $57,000
8 w 10 w 1,4,6,7
This is a pretty open field, with maybe only three real contenders. It could be a lucrative trifecta depending on who comes in third. I’m not sure who’s going to set the pace in this one, but look for 8 H Man to press and come on in time. Not far behind, 10 Rossie Val may slide into second.
Race 7, 6 1/2 Furlongs, Allowance $20,000
6 to win
5 Very Very Stella is very very tempting, even at even money. It’s interesting to note the sire fee was $4,000, while two of his competitors were a quarter of a million bucks. His speed figures are phenomenal, but he simply avoids winning. Instead, I’ll play 6 War Eagle’s Return at a moderately better price. Last out, Hernandez took him to the front and dusted the field. I’m hoping he can pull it off again today.
Race 8, 7 Furlongs, Jimmy Winkfield Stakes, $150,000
4 to win
3 Devine Entry looks like a vulnerable favorite. I’m leaning towards 4 A Different Style, despite his slight dip last out. That was coming first off a layoff, and he was forced to battle early. If he’s disciplined enough to press today rather than try to stay out front, he could take the trophy home with him.
Race 9, 6 1/2 Furlongs, Claiming $10,000
6 to win
6 Exchanging Secrets is a bit of a value play here. He’s has to change his locker around a few times over the past couple of months, but he’s competed at this level recently and competed a t a higher level in the spring.
